Opened in 1914, the historic Volksbühne Berlin commands attention with its central location on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Mitte. Over the course of its history, it has been celebrated for its experimental, insightful takes on the issues of the day. Catch a production at this popular theatre which has its finger on the pulse of Berlin's political and cultural climates.

Berlin - Germany's eclectic capital

Berlin is a true cultural and historical feast - from the iconic Berlin Wall, to world-leading museums, beer gardens and market halls, and colourful street-art murals that adorn practically every neighbourhood. Capture a photograph by the Victory Column or Brandenburg Gate, before diving into the treasures found at Museum Island, itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Uncover tragic stories from the Third Reich with a poignant visit to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, or enjoy a relaxing day by the shimmering shores of Lake Wannsee. Berlin's cultural calendar is brimming with events all-year round, ranging from the quirky to the traditional. The city also pulls out all the stops when it comes to exciting art exhibitions, cinema and theatre.

A theatre of the people, for the people, by the people

Damaged during WWII, the Volksbühne Berlin was renovated in 1954 by architect Hans Richter in an imposing Stalinist style. Frank Castorf, who took over as director in 1992, has been credited with continuing the tradition of incorporating the city's turbulent past into the theatre's output. In 2017, Chris Dercon took over as theatre director, causing some controversy. Yet over the years, the Volksbühne's productions have been lauded for their insightful response to contemporary political events. The theatre also hosts music concerts, literary events and film screenings, meaning there's something to please all tastes.
