Museum Nikolaikirche (Church of Nikolai) | Stadtmuseum Berlin

In the heart of Nikolai district, the cities oldest building is telling a storie about Berlin history. Named after this historic area, the Nikolaikirche was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in 1987 as a museum. In combination with TV Tower, Red City Hall and Marienkirche the Nikolaikirche completes all these elements and coins the skyline of Berlin.

The permanent exhibition in the Museum Nikolaikirche focuses on the building and its significance for Berlin's history with a variety of original objects. Interactive media open up their diverse facets in four languages. Stone steps can also descend to the ground level at the time the city was founded 800 years ago. In addition, the museum hosts changing art exhibitions and concerts, such as the annual Advent concerts or the weekly Nikolai music on Friday.
The church is one of the highlights of Brandenburg architecture and impressively reflects the self-confidence of a city-centered community. Even after the Reformation, the Berliners made their main parish church a place of bourgeois self-expression. With this additional role, the church became the "extended council chamber" and the city's best burial ground.
