At its opening in 1908 the Märkische Museum was the first special builing worldwide, which hosts a museum. Since then, it has not only been the venue for a huge collection of Berlin history objects, but also an exhibit in its own right.
Architect Ludwig Hoffmann, who was involved in the construction of the Pergamon Museum, combined architectural and artistic styles from the medieval Mark Brandenburg and northern Germany. The various exhibitions are dealing with questions such as: Who are the Berliners? How have you shaped your life, your work, your city over the centuries?
The Märkische Museum is dedicated to the history of Berlin through a variety of objects, including such unique pieces as the last surviving original part of the Quadriga from the Brandenburg Gate - a horse's head from Johann Gottfried Schadow's world-famous group of sculptures.
At the moment, the traditional museum is gradually being modernized. Now, the newly designed basement offers space for changing special exhibitions. The new permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT - Geschichte kompakt im Märkischen Museum – Berlin's Museum of History, Culture and Everyday Life – presents Berlin's most defining moments in an easy-to-understand and entertaining way. It offers both a good overview for those who are visiting Berlin for the first time, as well as more in-depth insights for those familiar with Berlin.
In addition to outstanding objects, multimedia content and interactive areas will take you on a journey through Berlin's history in less than an hour, from the Ice Age to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Those who want to deepen their knowledge will find more objects and stories in the upper level. The exhibition is accompanied by a lively audio guide in which the city itself speaks to the visitors – the Berlin rapper Romano also shares his very special view of Berlin's history.
In the outdoor area, the "Wall Pieces" can be seen all year round and are accessible on a daily basis: authentic segments of the Berlin Wall from which Berlin was once divided. A listening station provides the historical background with selected sound documents.
