The Theater an der Parkaue is one of the largest children's and youth theatres in Germany and is located in a listed building complex in Berlin's Lichtenberg district. The theatre sees itself as a theatre for everyone who is enthusiastic about the perspectives of young people.

The theatre has three stages with a total of 600 seats. The repertoire is aimed at children and school classes of different ages, as well as families and interested individual visitors. The repertoire at the Theater an der Parkaue ranges from dance and performances to productions of classical and contemporary plays. In addition, theatre plays on socially relevant topics are developed together with young people. History of the building

The initially Z-shaped building complex was built in 1911 according to the designs of the city planning officer Johannes Uhlig and the architect Wilhelm Grieme. Initially, the Renaissance-inspired building served as a secondary school for boys. In 1934, the school was renamed the ‘Joseph Goebbels School’ and survived the war almost unscathed. After the Second World War, it was rebuilt as the ‘House of Culture of the Soviet Union, Branch for Children’ and was used as a ‘Pioneer House’ with up to 130 working groups for children and young people until the reunification of Germany in 1990. In 1991, Manuel Schöbel became the youngest theatre director in Germany. Kay Wuschek managed the theatre from 2005 to 2019. Since the 2021/22 season, Christina Schulz and Alexander Riemenschneider have been managing the Theater an der Parkaue as dual directors.

On the theatre's website, teachers can find play information and accompanying materials for lessons, including a short theatre etiquette guide, free of charge. The theatre also offers preparatory and follow-up workshops, project days and various specialist days for teachers.

Accessibility

Accessibility is a major concern for the Theater an der Parkaue. It offers audio description and tactile tours for selected productions. There are also Relaxed Performances. In this way, the theatre aims to create an atmosphere for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses who are excluded in many places by conventional theatre rules. In this way, performances can be experienced in a more relaxed atmosphere. All stages have wheelchair-accessible seating.

The Theater an der Parkaue is easy to reach by public transport. The nearest station is S+U Frankfurter Allee (with lift) about 500 metres away.

There are only very limited parking facilities in the vicinity of the theatre.
