History meets high-tech

The SAMURAI Museum exclusively presents one of the world's largest private collections. On 1500 square meters of exhibition space, you can marvel at traditional Japanese craftsmanship with over 900 original historical objects, while interactive installations bring the distant era to life. Zoom into gigapixels to admire outstanding details, explore the labor-intensive processes of Japanese swordsmithing and marvel at unique nō and taiko performances every 30 minutes. Multimedia installations bring the legendary era to life in a playful way. From the Yokaigame to the magical fans, the riddles of our companion Kitsune or the role model for Darth Vader - let yourself be enchanted by the mysterious world of the samurai. Every step leads to a new discovery in Europe's only samurai museum. 

The Peter Janssen Collection

Inspired by his passion for martial arts and Japanese culture, Peter Janssen bought his first katana in Berlin over forty years ago and has been collecting samurai artifacts ever since. What began with a find at a flea market has now grown into a collection of more than 4,000 objects that is unique in its variety, quality and scope.

The pieces presented in the exhibition date from the late Kofun to the early Meiji period (6th-19th century) and offer fascinating insights into the development of Japanese culture and craftsmanship over more than 1,000 years. The collection includes far more than just samurai weapons and armor. Textiles, paintings, woodblock prints, tea utensils and Buddhist sculptures are also on display. Highlights of the collection include a palanquin from the 18th century, a suit of armor from the Matsudaira clan from the 17th century and tea utensils from the time of Sen no Rikyū (1522-1591).

Berlin-Mitte is the beating heart of the city and is home to many of its most famous landmarks, such as the Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island and Alexanderplatz. The Samurai Museum is enthroned in the middle of this lively backdrop and attracts art and history lovers and adventurous families alike.
