Komödie am Kurfürstendamm has been the place for high-class, metropolitan entertainment theatre in Germany for decades.
Maria Furtwängler, Katharina Thalbach, Jochen Busse, Walter Plathe, Herbert Herrmann, Nora von Collande, Oliver Mommsen, Tanja Wedhorn, and many more have performed and are still performing here.
Founded by Max Reinhardt in 1924, the traditional theatres have been managed by the Woelffer family since 1950. Both stages have nearly 100 years of tumultuous history behind them. The respective directorates always felt committed to the comedy genre.
"For us, comedy has many facets. It's a pleasure if we manage to dust off the classics. At the same time, we are always happy to premiere modern entertainment theatre," says former director Jürgen Wölffer, who in the summer of 2004 handed over the management of the Kudamm theatres to his son Martin. He carefully modernised the schedule and gained a new audience with productions such as "Männerhort", "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", and "As You Like It" for the Boulevard Theatre.
In June 2018, the Woelffer family temporarily moved to the Schiller Theatre with the theatre company, because the Kudamm-Karree where the two traditional theatres have been traditionally located, is being rebuilt. Because of this the stages will be demolished and a new theatre created. It is anticipated they will return to the Kurfürstendamm in 2021. The future of the Kudamm stages is thus secured. They will always be an important part of Berlin's cultural scene!
